    Summon: Search-Result Facets and Refinements

    • Product: Summon

What are Summon search-result facets and refinements?

Libraries using the legacy Summon interface should jump here. If you are not sure if your library uses the legacy or the 2.0 interface, compare your Summon search box to the legacy and 2.0 search boxes displayed in the Summon 2.0 overview.

Search-Result Facets and Refinements in Summon 2.0

Filters and facets are used to narrow a search results set to a more refined set of items. These tools appear along the left side of the Search Results page (highlighted in yellow below):

    Search Result Refinements

Available filters include the below options. Filters and facets are enabled/disabled in the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console:
    Refinement Effect on Search Results
Full Text Online The search results will display only items in which the patron has online access to the full-text.
    Scholarly & Peer-Review
The search results will display only those articles from scholarly publications, including peer-review, which is based on whether Ulrich's determines a journal is scholarly.
    Peer-Review
The search results will display only content verified as reviewed by peers in the profession, determined to be of academic quality, and suitable for publication, based on the same peer-reviewed standards as Ulrich's for journals and abstracts.
Open Access Search results will display only freely available and openly accessible content without requiring authentication by the user.  See Open Access Filter for details.
Library Catalog The search will only display those results in your library catalog.
Items at my institution The search will only display those results (print and electronic) available at your institution, rather than from other libraries in your consortium. Available to those libraries with a Union Catalog.
Add results beyond your library s collection This performs an open search of the entire Summon index (excluding other libraries catalogs and private, institutional, A&I databases). A patron can then see what is indexed on the breadth of a given topic, and perform an interlibrary loan (ILL) for items to which your library does not have full-text access.

The checkbox for this filter displays above the search results.

    Search Result Facets

There are two types of facets: targeted and contextual.
Targeted Facets are useful in managing records based on the nature of the result set. Targeted facets include the following:
Targeted facets are displayed by default on the results page.
Contextual Facets are useful in displaying the curated metadata from your library's MARC records in the context of your catalog. Contextual facets include the following:
    • Author
    • Genre
    • Region
    • Time Period
Contextual facets are not displayed by default, but rather in two ways: 1) when search results are filtered by Content Type: Book/eBook; and 2) when the patron selects the Library Catalog check box within the Refine your search section.

Facet counts are displayed to the right, as seen in the below Content Type example identifying that there are 1,729 journal articles in the search results set. By default a facet's top filter values are displayed.
    • A More link displays below each facet, click the link to display all filter values, sorted by rank.
    • When viewing all filter values after clicking the More link, you can use the Filter list search box when there are many facet values to sort through.

Filter list search box opens to the right of the facets pane when you click on a More link below a particular facet:

When multiple values are selected for a facet, Summon combines the values with a Boolean OR and refreshes your results set.

Expanding Your Options to Include or Exclude Facet Values

Click on a facet value to include it in your filtered search results. Once clicked, an item will display a Green checkmark to the right of the item, as seen below. To exclude a value, click on the Red 'X' that displays to the right of the item when you hover over it.

    Include / exclude icons

Summon automatically refreshes the search results set after a facet value is chosen for inclusion or exclusion.

To filter your search results in multiple ways and then have Summon refresh the results set all at once, click on the Edit Facets button (the pencil icon) at the top of the facets pane:
    Edit Facets button

Once you have made your selections, click the Apply button at the top of the facet pane to refresh your results set.

When multiple facet values are selected or excluded, Summon combines the values with a Boolean OR.

To clear all filters you have previously selected, click Clear Filters at the top of the facets pane.

How to Customize Facets and Refinements

You can enable or disable Facets and Refinements in the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console.
Use the Translations page in the administration console to change the text of labels related to this feature.

Search-Result Facets and Refinements in the legacy Summon interface

Filters and facets are used to narrow a search results set to a more refined set of items. These tools appear along the left side of the Search Results page. Use these filters either individually or collectively to narrow your search results. You can enable or disable Facets and Refinements in the Summon Administration Console.

    Search Result Facets

Summon facets refine search by content type
Facets appear on the Summon results page as shared aspects of the retrieved search results, and grouping items together into useful categories. For example, Content Type is a facet, including journal article, newspaper article, eBook, manuscript and others as possible types. Each facet has options dynamically generated by the Summon service based on the metadata within the index for each retrieved item.
To the patron, facets are filters that can be applied to narrow the result sets, allowing quick identification of the items most likely to benefit the patron's research goals.
You can enable or disable facets in the Settings page of the Summon Administration Console.
There are two types of facets: targeted and contextual.
Targeted Facets are useful in managing records based on the nature of the result set. Targeted facets include the following:

Contextual Facets are useful in displaying the curated metadata from your library's MARC records in the context of your catalog. Contextual facets include the following:

Contextual facets are not displayed by default, but rather in two ways: 1) when search results are filtered by Content Type: Book/eBook; and 2) when the patron selects the Items in the library catalog check box in the Refine your search section (see below).
Disciplines is a contextual facet that displays Disciplines based on Call Number and Subject Term matches. This contextual facet can only be accessed via a search box or search widget.

    Search Result Refinements

Refine your search is a collection of six filters that can be used individually or collectively to limit the result sources. You can enable or disable facets and refinements in the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console.
