    Question

Can the Pptrnupd legacy patron update program (SIF) load and process UTF-8 (Unicode) characters?

    Answer

Patron Update (Pptrnupd) is only able to process characters with Latin-1 encoding, because the database (as a whole) is not in UTF-8 format.

If you come across a patron who needs to have data stored with Unicode characters, you can enter this information into the Circulation client manually.

From there, we ensure that the data is displayed properly when called, even though it's not stored as such.

This same encoding limitation also applies to the XML (PpatronImpX) patron update.
