    Question

Many holdings (MFHD) records in the database do not have a normalized call number. Why does this happen?

    Answer

If the MFHD 852 field does not have a first indicator value, the call number will not be normalized, and MFHD_MASTER.NORMALIZED_CALL_NO will not be populated. The first indicator value dictates the normalization rules for the call number. Voyager will not attempt to normalize a call number that does not have a first indicator value to indicate the call number type.
