    Question

What is the difference between ITEM.RESERVE_CHARGES and RESERVE _ITEM_HISTORY.RESERVE_CHARGES?

    Answer

While the item is on a reserve list and is On Reserve, the ITEM.RESERVE_CHARGES counter should increment the charge/discharges that take place during that go round on reserve (i.e., if the item was checked out and returned 5 times while set to On Reserve, the Reserve Charges counter should currently show 5).  Note that the item must be discharged before the counter increments.

When the item is subsequently set to Off Reserve, the Historical Reserve Charges (RESERVE_ITEM_HISTORY.RESERVE_CHARGES) counter should then increment with the number of charges/discharges that have taken place during that particular go round on reserve (so, let's say the item is On Reserve and the Historical Reserve Counter is set to 20 because of previous reserve activity. If the Reserve Charges counter for the item is now 5 and then the item is set to Off Reserve, the Historical Reserve Charges counter should now increment to 25). The Reserve Charges counter (ITEM.RESERVE_CHARGES), since the item is no longer on reserve and its count has been added to Historical Reserve Charges, should now decrement to 0. Once the item is again set to On Reserve, that count will begin to increment again, starting with 0.

Note that the RESERVE_ITEM_HISTORY.RESERVE_CHARGES counter is cumulative and never should reset, so it continues to increment as an item is put on, taken off, put on and taken off reserve.
