    Question

We're ordering new barcodes; what requirements/guidelines should barcodes adhere to for Voyager?

    Answer

Voyager does not have any particular recommendations or restrictions. Many of our customers use either Codabar or Code39 for patron and/or item barcodes, and both can be in the database at the same time.

The only requirements for barcodes are the following:

    1. Barcodes have a max. length of 30 for item barcodes, 25 for patron barcodes.
    2. Characters may be alpha or numeric.
    3. Barcodes input through the circ client interface have the following "normalizing" operations performed on them: remove punctuation, remove spaces, uppercase.

    Additional Information

Voyager does not validate check digits and will treat a check digit in the barcode like any other digit in the barcode.
