Can I include Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for users to search in our E-Journal Portal?

Your Serials Solutions E-Journal Portal can support Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)*. This allows you to include databases into the MeSH categories, so that your users can more easily search within specific medical subjects when looking for journals and books in the E-Journal Portal. (The E-Journal Portal also provides the option of Hierarchical Interface to Library of Congress Classification -- HILCC -- which is discussed here.
To enable MeSH for your E-Journal Portal, go to the E-Journal Portal Administration Console -- Search Page Options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Serials Solutions' MeSH Feature

If a journal isn't associated with a particular MeSH category, can we add the journal to a category?
There is currently no way manually to add journals to the existing MeSH categories we use. The journals are mapped to MeSH headings based on their MARC records in our system, and we are unable to add MeSH to MARC records as it goes beyond our permissions as a CONSER affiliate.
Can we customize the subject hierarchy?
    Not at this time.
Why is the MeSH classification-system subject hierarchy organized in the manner that we see on the E-Journal Portal?
Because MeSH contains over 25,000 subjects, we were concerned about the presentational and user experience issues inherent in representing a hierarchy with 25,000+ subjects and 12+ levels. We investigated possible options and selected one -- based on feedback from librarians -- that leverages popular MeSH subjects to provide superior results for you and your patrons.
What version of MeSH headings is Serials Solutions using?
Serials Solutions is currently using the National Library of Medicine's 2011 medical subject headings (MeSH). For questions about any MeSH headings, please consult the NLM web site.
Can I see which MeSH headings are associated with a title in the Client Center? (Added Oct. 15, 2010)
To see which MeSH headings are associated with a title, please perform the following steps in the Client Center:

    1. Search for the appropriate title.
    2. Click on the title's name.
    3. Click on the "Title Metadata" link on the left-hand navigation tree.
    4. "MeSH headings (if applicable) will be listed below the "HILCC Subjects" on this page.

    * MeSH is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary used for indexing articles for MEDLINE/PubMed. MeSH terminology provides a consistent way to retrieve information that may use different terminology for the same concepts. More information about MeSH is available from the National Library of Medicine.
