After v20 SP 3356: "'Aleph Circulation has stopped working." on search

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Description:
We installed SP 3556 on our Production server this morning and are encountering problems after doing a few searches in circulation. Check-in and check-out of items work fine.

The message: "Aleph Circulation has stopped working. A problem caused the progam to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. Close program'' appears and you are forced to close the program.

    Resolution:
Open the Circulation GUI and navigate to "Help...About". The last two lines of the dialog box should look something like this:

    GUI Version: 20.2.4 (3556)
    Server Version: 20.2.4 (3556).

If they are not the same, you need to get a version on your pc which matches the server. (Note: the program which executes Version Check is verutil.exe. Version Check can not bring in a new version of verutil.exe because the program can't overwrite itself.)

You can try this on one of the PCs with the mismatched versions:

    #1
Override the verutil.exe with the (changed) version from the server..

    * Save the .\Alephcom\bin\verutil.exe on your pc as "verutil.exe.beforetest"

    * ftp the /exlibris/aleph/a20_1/aleph/pc_exe/sp_exe/alephcom/bin/verutil.exe from your server to the \Alephcom\bin\ directory on your pc.

    * Compare the date and size of the .\Alephcom\bin\verutil.exe.beforetest to the verutil.exe you just ftp-ed.

If the size or date is different, then start your client and see if you see different behavior in Version Check.
If the size and date are the same, let us know and we will proceed from there. OR

Alternatively: the verutil.exe file can be downloaded from the Documentation Center prior to Service Pack installation and copied to the PC directory ...\Alephcom\Bin\. Then open one of the GUI and run version check.. OR, if for some reason that doesn't seem to work,

    #2
Install gui500.exe to a different directory (say AL500temp) on the PC and copy the necessary executables to their corresponding location in C:\AL500:

    C:\AL500temp\Acq\bin\Acq.exe
    C:\AL500temp\Alephadm\bin\Alephadm.exe
    C:\AL500temp\Alephcom\bin\Printd.exe
    C:\AL500temp\Alephcom\bin\VerUtil.exe
    C:\AL500temp\Catalog\bin\Catalog.exe
    C:\AL500temp\Circ\bin\Circ.exe

In essence this is what VerUtil.exe does.
