    Code 39 barcodes with ALEPH

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 16.02

    Description:
A unit in our organization would like to use Code 39 barcodes in the item record, as opposed to a 13-digit numeric dumb barcode. We have not set up the system for barcodes yet. My questions - Will ALEPH accept any barcode standard? Can it accommodate the use of two different types of barcodes in item records, the alphanumeric as well as numeric?

    Resolution:
Letters -- or letters mixed with numbers -- are not a problem, but I find that the Code 39 specification includes the following puncutation:
    - . $ / + % SPACE
The inclusion of punctuation in the barcode is problematic and should be avoided.

The barcodes should use only uppercase or lowercase letters (that is, they do not use a combination of upper- and lower-case letters and expect the ALEPH programs to distinguish).
