    Description:
What's the difference between "Closed Stacks", "Reading Room", and "Course Reserves" functions?

    Resolution:
KB 5821 describes Reading Room Setup.

The set-up is very similar to Closed Stacks, but in Reading Room there's a type 4 line in the xxx50 tab_attr_sub_library. This line causes the z30_item_sub_library to be changed to the Reading Room sublibrary and a z310 record to be created when an item is loaned. This is described in KB 16384-1941.

In the "Course Reserves" (Course Reading, Reserve Room) set-up, Course Reserves doc records are created in the xxx30 library. The xxx30 record can be linked to an xxx01 bib record and the z30_sub_library of the associated xxx50 items is changed to the CR sublibrary. It stays that way until the item is removed from Reserves. The xxx30 doc record is linked to a Course record (z108).

Many North American sites have Closed Stacks and Course Reserves, but not Reading Room. I believe it's mostly UK and German sites which are using the Reading Room function.
