    Description:
    I'm unable to connect to an ALEPH site via Z39.50 using YAZ. This is what I see:

    Z> open tcp:server.name.edu:9991
    Connecting...error = System (lower-layer) error: Connection refused
    Connection refused

    How do I know if the port is open? How do I know if authentication is required?

    Resolution:
    How do I know if the port is open?

    [Answer] Look at the z39_server log. If you see your attempt to connect, then the port is open. If you don't see any indication when you try to connect on 9991, then it probably is a firewall problem

    How do I know if authentication is required?

    [Answer] ALEPH always requires authentication. Unless the ALEPH site has configured this specifically, then ALEPH uses the default ID of Z39 with a password of Z39. You should confirm that there is a staff user of Z39 defined (password Z39) with Z39.50 privileges to access the relevant database.
