Fine In Spite of Grace Period

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
Why did patron ABC00006108 receive the fine of $0.75 in spite of the grace period? This patron returned an item AFTER the Library was closed for two weeks' Christmas break. Aleph correctly calculated the item to be 3 days overdue based on:

    actual due date: 12/16/09
library still open 12/17/09 and 12/18/09
    library closed 12/19/09 through 01/03/10
item returned 01/04/10 (3 days late)

Aleph accounted for open/closed days correctly, but did not credit the grace period. I have reviewed KB 16384-19953 but its resolution does not match this problem. Following are more details.

    bor_status: 01
    item_status: 01

    Cash details are:
Circulation Type Late return - Late return
    Loan Date 11/30/2009
    Due Date 12/16/2009 11:59 PM
    Original Due Date 12/16/2009
    Return Date 01/05/2010 01:09 PM
    Patron Status Undergraduate
    Loan Time 11/30/2009 01:29 PM
    Due Time 12/16/2009 11:59 PM
    Original Due Date 12/16/2009
    Return Time 01/05/2010 01:09 PM

    The circulation log shows:
    Action: Cash transaction created
    Description: Cash (Debit:1.00) transaction created for Late return <0004 0000 D .25>. Net Amount:1.00, VAT:0.00.

I have checked KB16384-19953 resolution steps accordingly:

tab_sub_library.eng has "16A" as the Group ID for tab16 (col.7):

tab16 has the following line for the combination of 16A, 01 (item status), and 01 (patron status):

Note that column 7 has "07", indicating a 7 day grace period.

tab17 lists all the closed days of our Christmas break:

    Resolution:
You have specified "D", an Open Days method of fine calculation, but as noted in KB 3915: "Even if you specify an "open-days" method, closed days are still counted against the grace-period days."
