    Description

We have cases of repeated $$b's (the sublibrary subfield) in our HOL 852 fields.  In migrating records to Alma some of them are ending up with incorrect values.  How can we locate these cases in Aleph so that we can correct them?

    Resolution

The MARC Format for Holdings allows the 852 $$b and $$c to be repeated (see  http://www.loc.gov/marc/holdings/hd852.html): "May be repeated to indicate the organizational hierarchy of the sublocation") and, as can be seen in the ./usm60/tab/check_doc_line, Aleph is set up accordingly:

     AL XX      852   b 0 -
     AL XX      852   c 0 -

The hyphen in column 7 indicates "unlimited occurrences".  In practice multiple $$b's or $$c's seem like a bad idea.

The following can be done to locate cases of multiple $$b's in Aleph 852 fields:

    1. Change the ./xxx60/tab/check_doc_line to the following to indicate that the 852 $$b is not repeatable:

     AL XX      852   b 0 1

    2. Run the manage-25 Service in xxx60 specifying "CATALOG-INSERT" as the "Check routine".  (This presumes that you have the following line in the ./xxx60/tab/check_doc:

     CATALOG-INSERT       check_doc_line                                                                               .)

The same can be done for the "c" (collection) subfield.

(Note that the check_doc "check_doc_852" routine serves a different purpose:  it checks to make sure that the $$b is in tab_sub_library.lng and the $$c is in tab40.lng.)
