How to identify cause of Error messages in cataloging

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
    Issue:
When I copy records from Library of Congress or Yeshiva University via z39.50 and then save them, and they have an 880 field with subfield 6, I get an error message "Error: There is only one 24510 field containing subfield 6 with occurrence number 88." (for different fields)
It used to be a message which was in red and then I could not even save the record. I commented out the lines with this message in $data_tab/check_doc_manadatory. But now I still get the message (in green) and do overwrite.
I want to save the record as it is and not have to do any override or see and error messages.
    Where is this coming from?

    Resolution:
The file $data_tab/check_doc contains many procedures which are checked on the records at various times. When a record is saved in cataloging module the procedures associated with CATALOG-INSERT (column 1 of table) are performed. By default a procedure named "check_doc_paired_fields" is there in column 2. If you comment this line out (or remove it) you will no longer get the message. Section 16.27.2 "Check Programs Available for Column 2 of the check_doc Table" explains this procedure as follows:

check_doc_paired_fields This program checks the following two aspects related to fields that are linked by subfield $6 (subfield $6 contains data that links fields that are different script representations of each other):
If the record contains a field with subfield $$6 <value numeric - other than '00'>, there must be an additional field with the same tag and indicators and the same $$6 value.
If the record contains a field with subfield $$6 <value numeric - other than '00'>, there must be no more than two fields that have the same $$6 value.
