    Question

Circulation activities are slow for some of patrons. What can be the cause of this?

    Answer

Ex Libris has noticed that circulation activities (especially return) become slow in cases there are lot of Z309-records in the database. Z309 is storing the circulation log entries.

SP 20.2.3 (May 2011) includes rep_change #3436 that improves performance when lot of Z309-records exist.

Even after installation of this fix we recommend to try to reduce the number of Z309-records as much as possible to improve performance:

    - If not needed in your usual circulation workflow, you may deactivate logger creation for specific circulation activities. To do so, set col. 2 of tab_circ_log.<lng> to N for the specific activity.

    - You should clean up old Z309-entries (e.g. all log-entries that are older than one year) regularly using service p_cir_78. Please note that also in p_cir_78 there were performance problems when huge number of z309-entries exist. This performance problem is corrected by rep_change #3437 (SP 20.2.3 - May 2011). Please note that you should follow Implementation Notes of rep_change #3437 to create z309_id6 after installing this rep_change as otherwise performance will not be improved.
