    Records Greyed Out in Cataloging

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Description:
Our catalogers are unable to edit the Holdings Record: when they click the “Edit” button to edit the Holdings, the Holdings record is greyed out.
When try to edit anyway, we get the error "Editing of tag X--denied permission".
Note: The same can happen with BIB records, Authority records, Course Reserve, etc.

    Resolution:
The most common cause of this is the presence of a .../xxxnn/pc_tab/catalog/permission.dat table (in this case, an .../abc60/pc_tab/catalog/permission.dat table) which does not include the log-in which the cataloger is using.

If you want to continue using permission.dat:
add the login to the table,
do UTIL-M-7 to generate a new Tables Package for this library, and then
do "ALEPH --> Connect to <the library>" to load the new Tables Package.

But permission.dat is necessary only if you want to specify that certain fields can only be edited by certain catalogers. Many sites don't use it. To stop using it:
    rename it to "permission.dat.notused",
do UTIL-M-7 to generate a new Tables Package for this library, and then
do "ALEPH --> Connect to <the library>" to load the new Tables Package.
