    manage-02 produces huge z01.comp.seq and z02.comp.seq files; fills up disk

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 21

    Problem Symptoms:
    When the manage-02 service is run in the xxx01 library and the xxx10 library at the same time with a setting of p_delete_flag "0" (Update headings index), the xxx10 manage-02 runs for ten times longer than it should (without finishing) and writes tremendously large ./xxx10/files/z01.comp.seq and ./z02.comp.seq files, such as these:

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 aleph exlibris 146463653888 Feb 1 16:10 z02.comp.seq
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 aleph exlibris 162477965312 Feb 1 16:10 z01.comp.seq

    Cause:
    The cause is either:

    1. running manage-02 in xxx01 and xxx10 at the same time, or
    2. running manage-02 in xxx10 with p_delete_flag "0".

    Or, possibly, a combination of the two.

    Resolution:
    * Immediate solution: do "ps -ef |grep manage_02" for this library and kill the processes found; do "ps -ef |grep compress" and kill those as well. Then restart the job.

    * To prevent:
    When manage-02 in the xxx01 library is preceded by manage-102 (as it normally would be), the correct setting for p_delete_flag is "0".

    When manage-02 is run in the xxx10 library, the correct setting for p_delete_flag is *always* "1" (Rebuild entire headings index).

    I believe that the likeliest cause of this problem is #2. But, to be safe, you may want to avoid running manage-02 in two libraries at the same time.
