Error sending message to user: "The email channel is disabled. Please contact your system administrator."

Question

When sending a "General mail" message to a patron from the User Details page, an error is returned: "The email channel is disabled. Please contact your system administrator."

What does this error mean and how can it be resolved?

Answer

The letter template used for the "General mail" message to users is the "ILL EMAIL TO USER" letter.

Check whether this letter is enabled at Configuration > General > Letters > Letters Configuration.
