Multiple edits of records with multiple versions and the New York Times

Records that have multiple formats, availability and subscription models are often being edited multiple times by various institutions in order to accurately represent a specific version purchased in a specific acquisition model by a particular vendor.

For example, the New York Times has been edited multiple times by various institutions to better represent either the web version or the digitized version.

Thus being called by various names such as

  • New York Times (Website)
  • The New York times on the Web
  • New York Times (Online)

These names represent different scopes of the New York Times, and may impact the CDI results as they rely on the title because many articles do not contain the publication's ISSN.

We therefore recommend any edits done on such records that aim to improve the accuracy of the title or scope would be done locally (using Copy to Catalog in the Record Actions menu) and not on the CZ level (details on this are also available here: Contributing to the Community Zone - Bibliographic records)

Specifically for the New York Times, aggregators and content providers offer a variety of subscriptions that include various coverage of print, online and digitized content. The different products are being supported by different metadata, which might retrieve results in CDI that are not included in your subscription. These occurrences currently cannot be completely obliterated due to the cataloging differences.
