Selecting the Default Port

Description:
Changing the MetaLib public interface port default from 8331 (for example, to 80) impacts the system in ways that should be considered before a final decision is made.

Resolution:
The change port utility is called UTIL S and it is well documented in the System Administration Guide (MetaLib > 4.x > System Administration > MetaLib Version 4.1.x System Administration Guide.pdf).

When apache runs on a port below 1024 (like 80), root permission is needed in order to restart apache.

This can be important when applying a Service Pack. For example, the person applying the Service Pack will need root permissions to stop and start apache. This often means that the system administrator's assistance will be required in the Service Pack process.

On a high port (one above 1024), the entire process can be performed by the MetaLib user.

In general, it is up to the customer to decide whether or not to keep root or sudo user information on file with Ex Libris Support.
If the user information is not available to Ex Libris Support, then Support should be provided with a contact name for Support Incidents on which root permission will be needed.
Using a low port number makes it more likely that support work will be delayed until the necessary contact is located.
