Activating Targets/Collections for CDI by Collection Type for Discovery

    Translatable

This article provides information about the different collection types in our knowledge bases for content that is available for discovery in CDI via Primo. With single activation, collection activation (for full text and for search) is managed from  Alma and SFX. Every collection that is indexed directly or via alternative coverage in CDI contains information about how it can be activated and how linking works, as well as some activation and configuration options.

The full list of collections is available here:

Collections containing electronic content come in many shapes and forms. How they are treated for discovery depends on a variety of criteria including material type of content, uniqueness of content, available unique identifiers, and metadata and method and stability of links to the platform. Each collection is described in our knowledge bases with the following information:

    • Collection type – The valid values are Selective, Aggregator or Database.

    • Search rights – The valid values are Free or Subscription

    • Full text rights – The valid values are Subscription (Collection level), Subscription (Title Level), Hybrid, Open Access, and Partially Open Access.

    • Linking method – The valid values are Link in record, Link resolver, or Hybrid

    • CDI Type – The valid values are Full Text Collection, A&I database, or Hybrid

The table below provides some more detailed information about what content types exist, and how best to activate them in Alma and SFX to provide the best possible discovery experience to your users.

A collection is active for full text in Alma when the following conditions have been met:

    • Databases require an unsuppressed bibliographic record and a collection-level URL.

    • Aggregator/Selective collections require an active full text service and at least one active portfolio with an unsuppressed bibliographic record.

A collection can also be activated for full text in CDI only, not for Alma (link resolver). For more information on how to do this and what the implications in CDI and Alma are, see The “CDI-only full text activation” Option.

The terminology in the following table is adjusted to Alma. The functionality is the same for SFX, apart from the "Activate for full text in CDI Only" function, which only exists in Alma.

Electronic Collection Type CDI Content related to this collection Search Rights Full Text Rights Linking CDI Type Example How will this work? Best Practices for activation in CDI

    Selective / Aggregator

Selective collection with Full text, works with Link Resolver

    Free / Subscription

Subscription (Title Level) / Open access

    Link Resolver

    Full Text Collection

    JSTOR Books Language and Literature

CDI content is activated based on Portfolios activation. Linking will use Link resolver

Activate for Full text in Alma/SFX with "We subscribe to only some titles in this collection" set to Yes

Selective collection with Full text, works with Link in Record

    Free / Subscription

Subscription (Title Level) / Open access

    Link in Record

    Full Text Collection

    Alexander Street literature

CDI content can be activated on collection level or title level. Linking is Link in record, as the titles do not hold enough metadata to use Link Resolver linking

Activate for Full text in Alma/SFX with "We subscribe to only some titles in this collection" set to No.

    OR:
Activate for full text in CDI Only (Alma only)

Selective collection with Full text works with hybrid linking

    Free / Subscription

    Subscription (Title Level)

    Hybrid

    Full Text Collection

    ProQuest Central

Part of the collection has good identifiers and use Link resolver. Part of the collection has no portfolios or don't have good identifiers, therefor is using Link in Record.

Activate for Full text in Alma/SFX with "We subscribe to only some titles in this collection" set to No.

    Database

Database collection with Full text, works with Link in Record

    Free / Subscription

Subscription (Collection level) / Open access

    Link in Record

    Full Text Collection / Hybrid

    Gale Nineteenth Century Collections Online

CDI content is activated at the collection level and uses Link in Record.

Note: for small number of databases, where the content is a mix of full text and A&I content which is unique and cannot be linked with the Link Resolver,  the CDI Type is set to Hybrid. Linking for all content in the database will be Link in Record.

Activate for Full Text in Alma/SFX

    OR:
Activate for Full Text in CDI Only (Alma only)

Database collection of A&I content, works with link Resolver

    Free / Subscription

    Subscription (Title Level)

    Link Resolver

    Abstracting and Indexing database (A&I)

    Scopus

This is an A&I Database so there is no Full text directly from this Database.
Records will appear as full text available when they match other Full text activations. Linking will use Link Resolver.

In Alma: Activate for Search or Activate for Full Text, or
Activate for Full Text in CDI Only.
(All types of activations have the same effect)

    In SFX:
Activate for Search or Full Text in SFX (Both types of activations have the same effect)

Database collection with a mix of A&I and Full text content, works with hybrid linking

    Free / Subscription

    Hybrid

    Hybrid

    Hybrid

    ERIC (Education Resources Information Center)

Part of the collection has direct link to full text on the provider platform, and part not. Records with no link will work as regular A&I records (Records will appear as full text available when they match other Full text activations. Linking will use Link Resolver.
) and records with direct link will show as available and use link in record.

    In Alma:
Activate for Full Text OR Activate for Full Text in CDI Only.

In SFX activate for full text

Some of the collection may not match to the types above. We are in the process of adjusting all the collections to match one of the types listed.
