    Question

What can be used in place of the Gary Strawn location changer tool and/or how can the Location in the 852 subfield b of MFHD records be changed in bulk?

    Answer

Global Data Change (GDC) can be used to change the location code in bulk for MFHDs records by using "Replace String With String" (see Chapter 3 in the GDC User's Guide for information about replacing a string with another string, and see Appendix A for an example of such a string replacement). Note that strings are case sensitive.  GDC can not change the "Permanent Location" on the Item Record.

Pick and Scan can also be used if all MFHDs to be changed also have item records attached (see the "Tip" in Table 7-1 and the related option to change the MFHD "Holdings" along with the "Permanent Location" in the Item Record).

Bulk Import can not be used to make changes to an existing MFHD record's location (852 subfield b).
