Question
Can Aleph barcodes contain lowercase alphabetic characters?

Answer
Though there doesn't seem to be any official prohibition against lowercase characters in barcodes, as described in the articles linked to in Additional Information below, there have been problems with the use of lowercase characters in both patron and item barcodes.
In one case patron barcodes containing lowercase characters were deleted by a subsequent PLIF load.

We strongly suggest that only uppercase characters be used.
