How often should Aleph be shut down/restarted?

Question

After moving to a backup method (TSM backup along with Oracle RMAN) that does not require weekly cold backups, there is no need to shut down the database periodically. Given which, is there a need to run aleph_shutdown/aleph_startup with any particular frequency?

Answer

There is no official Ex Libris recommendation in this regard, but, since the server and the daemon logs can get very large and unwieldy, and since certain problems can be exacerbated by leaving the processes running for days or weeks, nightly, or at least weekly, restarts of the www_ and pc_server's (see KB 16384-14609: "How often should the www_server and pc_server be restarted") and a monthly run of aleph_shutdown/aleph_startup to clear out the other servers, the ue daemons and the lib_batch processes, are informally recommended.

If no backup / restart of Oracle is being done as part of this, the aleph_shutdown and aleph_startup take no more than 5-10 minutes.
