Slow response in connection with items **MASTER RECORD**

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 19.01

    Description:
We have titles with thousands of items. We see slow response time in search, loan, and/or return -- especially with these titles/items.

    Resolution:
[Note: Missing Oracle indexes are frequently a cause of slowness. Article 000043308 (“*How to tell if Oracle indexes for a particular library are present & VALID?*”) has SQL you can use to check for missing Oracle indexes.]

If there is slowness in displaying the Items List in the GUI when there are many items with many loans, consult Article 000033261 (“Slow display of GUI Items List when there are many items with many loans”).

If you see slow response time accessing item records in GUI, also consult Article 000046207 (“Slow response time accessing item records in GUI”) (missing z50 Oracle index).

Article 000034153 (“Retrieval of records with many items is very slow”) is a case at a TWO-TASK site where switching to a different DB server greatly improved the speed in displaying items.

For slowness in loan/return of items:

Article 000044836 (“Slow check-out of items which have been loaned many times”)

If there is slowness in displaying the Brief List for titles with thousands of items in OPAC, you should, as a test, temporarily comment out the expand_doc_bib_loc_xxx and expand_doc_bib_z30, to see if that makes a dfference.

If there is slowness in displaying the Items List on the Holdings Detail screen in OPAC, www_no_items_display may be involved. (See KB's 5206 and 5512.)

Article 000037535 (“Logical base response very slow”) describes a cause of OPAC search slowness ... not related to the number of items.

You may want to look at Article 000032947 (“Limit on item records per bib record”).
