Unable to retrieve set of records" error when trying to display

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 16.02

    Description:
When you click on "Show" to display the results of an OPAC search in the GUI, you get the message "Remote Service Error (c1005 11) Unable to retrieve set of records".

Or, for a Browse, when you try to display the titles:

Error 49 Not defined for service C1011 LOAD-SET in file pc_sear_c1011

In the pc_server log you see messages such as these:
    PROGRAM: pc_sear_c1011

    Oracle error: io_z05_write
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    io_z05_write: REATTEMPTING TO WRITE Z05...

    Oracle error: io_z05_update
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    Oracle error: io_z05_update
    ORA-01003: no statement parsed

    Oracle error: io_sequence_next
    ORA-00936: missing expression

    Oracle error: io_z05_write
    ORA-00903: invalid table name

    Oracle error: io_z110_write
    ORA-00903: invalid table name

    Oracle error: io_z110_write
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    io_z110_write: REATTEMPTING TO WRITE Z110...

    Oracle error: io_z110_start
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    Oracle error: io_z05_update
    ORA-01003: no statement parsed

[Note: since the z05 and z110 are also used by the Web OPAC, you would see similar errors there.]

    Resolution:
    The z05 and z110 result-set tables are re-initialized by clear_vir01.

This problem occurs when the pc_server is running and a user tries to retrieve a result-set at the time clear_vir01 is re-initializing the z05 and z110.

The clear_vir01 log may not show any error, but we find that the errors start occurring in the pc_server log *immediately* after clear_vir01 is run.

The immediate solution is to restart the pc_server and the www_server. If the $alephe_scratch/clear_vir01 log shows z05 or z110 errors, then you will need to recreate those tables, using either util a/17/1 or clear_vir01 -- but we have found that usually there are no such errors and the util a/17/1 / clear_vir01 do *not* need to be run.

It would seem that this might also be a problem if the p_sdi_01 job (which generates z05 and z110 records) were running at the same time as clear_vir01.

The solution is to run clear_vir01 at a time when users are not likely to be doing searches and the print daemon is not running. Or to stop the pc_ and www_server, run clear_vir01, then restart the servers. (See KB 5297 about the method for doing this.)
