    manage-102: thousands of "b_manage_102_a2: T-Z01 Overflow" errors

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Problem Symptoms:
manage-102 ("Pre-Enrich Bibliographic Headings Based on the Authority Database") ran to completion but got almost 10,000 errors, such as the following:

    b_manage_102_a2: T-Z01 Overflow : Doc#:XXX10 001418339 Tag: 5102

    Cause:
Problem with four specific authority records. (See Additional Information below.)
The grep's of the ./xxx01/scratch xxx01_p_manage_102.log show that all of the messages are coming from four particular authority records.
All of the tags are either 500 or 510.
Generally, the "T-Z01 Overflow" message is issued by the b_manage_102_a2 program when the authority record in question has more than 499 heading fields.

    Resolution:
    Two choices:

    1. Make changes to these authority records, as suggested in Additional Information below, and rerun the manage-102, or
    2. Ignore these errors and proceed with the manage-02.

    Additional Information

The following shows that these messages are coming from four particular authority records:

    > grep -c 'Doc#:XXX10 000407575' xxx01_p_manage_102.log
    6726
    > grep -c 'Doc#:XXX10 001073751' xxx01_p_manage_102.log
    14
    > grep -c 'Doc#:XXX10 001418339' xxx01_p_manage_102.log
    861
    > grep -c 'Doc#:XXX10 001615166' xxx01_p_manage_102.log
    2710

    Note: despite the 6726 errors for xxx10 doc# 000407575, there are only 84 5xx tags in doc 000407575 .

    Analysis:

The "T-Z01 Overflow" message is issued by the b_manage_102_a2 program when the authority record in question has more than 499 heading fields (fields indexable in the z01 Browse index). The fields beyond 499 are not indexed (-- but the others are).

But it seems that there can be cases (such as these) where the message is issued even though there are fewer than 499 heading fields in the record. What the 000407575, 001073751, and 001615166 records have in common is an unusually long 673 field. And 001418339, an unusually long 670 field. Even though the 670 and 673 tags are not browse-indexed (that is, they are not in tab11_acc) their presence could somehow be adversely affecting the b_manage_102_a2 program.

These four records are the only ones affected and *most* of the headings -- even in these records -- are indexed.

Only two sites have reported this problem (in the more than 10 years that this error message has been included in Aleph).

Sites seeing this problem for authority records with fewer than 500 browse-indexed fields should contact jerry.specht@exlibrisgroup.com .
