z13/z13u including only first occurrence of field

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Description:
We have cases (020, 022, 035, and 245*) where there are multiple occurrences of a field; we find that only the first occurrence of the field is included in the z13 (or z13u).

(*Multiple occurrences of the 245 field would be when the parallel/paired 245 is being used, for latinized/vernacular titles.)

    Resolution:
As noted in KB 16384-18945, when there are multiple occurrences of a field, only the first occurrence is included in the z13/z13u.

The z13-building process is sensitive to indicator values. If the tag has an indicator distinguishing one use of the field from another (such as, 035, first indicator "9", to indicate an old system number), then the indicator can be specified with the field in tab22 to place those occurrences in a distinctive z13/z13u field:

    USER-9 1 035 #
    USER-10 1 0359#

Also, there is the ability (by placing a value of "2" in tab22, column 3) to indicate that an edit_paragraph number is to be used (instead of a particular tag). For instance, with this in tab22 for the 035 field:

    USER-DEF-3 2 035

    and this in edit_paragraph.eng:

!* Include all occurrences of 035 field
    035 035## D ^ ## A

    the following z13u is generated:

    02 z13u_user_defined_3 ......... (OCoLC)09536003 (OCoLC)01605994 (OCoLC)02449172

If the field is a contains multiple words (rather than a single number), you can separate each occurrence of the field in the resulting single field by a suffix of period and spaces the in edit_paragraph.eng entry:

    !1 2 3 4 5 6
    !!!-!!!!!-!-!!!!!!!!!!-!!!!!!!!!!-!
    650 650## D .^^ A

Aside from this, the only choice is to use the Z00R -- where all occurrences of a tag are automatically included -- instead of the z13/z13u.
