Why can expired patrons place requests?

    • Product: Alma

    Question

Why can expired patrons place requests, although they cannot checkout materials? Is there a way to disable this functionality?

    Answer

When a User's Patron Role has expired, they still can place a request in Primo. The assumption is that they will arrive or call the circulation desk and renew or establish their card (e.g. for future research visitors).

It is possible however to disable request or resource sharing request, with the switch check_for_expired_account.  When "true", requests  or resource sharing requests can't be placed in Primo by expired patrons. The parameter is found in: Configuration Menu > User Management > General > Other Settings.

It is support's experience that it is also needed for Patron Role to be "inactive", or add expiration date in the past to the "User" record.

Alternatively , if you were to remove the user’s patron role, or add a block, these users will not be able to place requests.

    Additional Information

Find out more in "Configuring Other Settings (User Management)".

Regarding the implication of Expiry Date for the User record - find "Expiration Date", in: "Managing Users".
