Series Statements
When displaying series statements, the system uses the 8XX data that is pointed to by the 490 field with a first indicator of 1.
The data is formatted and concatenated as follows:
- No punctuation is added to the contents of $a (title statement) and its concatenated subfields.
- Punctuation that exists in the data is not removed.
-
When data is displayed from different tags such as 490 0# $$a $$v and 830 ## $$a $$v, a semi-colon and spaces are placed between the parts. For example:Series: American annual papers Vol. 23 ; Official papers 2015
- In cases where a part ends with punctuation, no semi-colon is added.
-
In cases where a tag has repeatable subfields such as the 490 with more than one $a and $v, the displayed data keeps the order of the subfields as stored in the record; and in the cases where the subfield content does not contain punctuation, a semi-colon and spaces are placed before the second (and onward) appearances of $a. For example:490 0# $a Department of State publication ;$v 7846 $a Department and Foreign Service series ;$v 128Series: Department of State publication ;7846 ; Department and Foreign Service series ; 128
See the table below for the guidelines used to create the display of series information.
