    Question

What determines the holdings 852 field first indicator value?

    Answer

The call number hierarchy and call number type determine this value.

If a call number hierarchy has been set in Cataloging > Options > Preferences > Call Number Hierarchies, the call number type of this hierarchy (set in System Administration > Cataloging > Call Number Hierarchy) will determine the value that will populate the first indicator when the mfhd is created.

Likewise, the 852 first indicator value is determined by the call number type set for the call number hierarchy used when creating mfhds via Bulk Import.
