How are our records exported to OCLC encoded (utf-8 or marc-8)?

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20

    Description:
Our OCLC rep asked me how our records are encoded, either utf-8 or marc-8, do you know how I can check that?
    [ <Jerry Specht > ]

    Resolution:
p_print_03 is used to export records from Aleph.

The format of the output will depend on the Character Conversion routine specified in the p_print_03 submission. If "UTF_TO_MARC8" is specified, the records will be in MARC8. If no conversion is specified, they will be in UTF-8.

For some vendors, this format information will be enough. Others insist on going by the LDR byte 09 where blank = MARC8 and "a" = UTF/Unicode. KB 16384-2162 describes options for setting this LDR byte 09.
