What is included in CDI and what is searched?

CDI contains citation metadata from a large number of providers including publishers, aggregators, and abstracting and indexing (A&I) services, open access content providers such as universities. CDI also includes searchable full text from a number of participating providers. (See the content and coverage article for more information about participating publishers and titles.) A deduplication process called Match and Merge creates a single primary Summon record when a citation for the same item is received from multiple providers.

    Searching Specific Fields

Many metadata fields in CDI can be explicitly searched via the Summon Advanced Search page. As an alternative, users can perform specific field searches using the Basic Search (keyword) search box. The search syntax to use is: (field:(query)). For example, the search (Author:(kerouac)) finds records that contain that value in the Author field. Specific-field searching is available for the following fields:

    • Author
    • CorporateAuthor (written as one word)
    • Title
    • Subtitle
    • DocumentTitleAlternate (written as one word)
    • PublicationTitle (written as one word)
    • SubjectTerms (written as one word)
    • Abstract
    • CODEN
    • DEWEY

    Fields Included in Basic Searches

The following metadata fields are the ones most commonly received from providers, and are the primary ones queried when a user does a Basic Search:

    • Title
    • Subtitle
    • DocumentTitleAlternate
    • Author
    • CorporateAuthor
    • PublicationTitle
    • ISSN
    • ISBN
    • PublicationPlace
    • Issue
    • Abstract
    • PublicationDate

Metadata fields that are not included in the default search are fields that do not typically improve search relevance, such as LogoURL and Copyright.

If the include matches in Full Text option is set to On, the following fields are also included.
