    Problem Symptoms

    After regen or upgrade, log shows: Failed to generate paired fields for 880s - bibid = {bib_id}

    Cause

    An 880 pair in the record does not conform to MARC standard.

    Resolution

    This message is informative rather than an indication that the record must be updated. If cataloging practices allow unpaired 880 fields, these messages may appear. Operators can examine the records associated with the logged bib_id numbers and see if any cataloging changes should be made according to local practices.

    Additional Information

    Fully content-designated representation, in a different script, of another field in the same record. Field 880 is linked to the associated regular field by subfield $6 (Linkage). A subfield $6 in the associated field also links that field to the 880 field.

    See: CAT/WebV: 880 subfield 6 not searchable for some basic information about 880 fields.

    See also: Chapter 2 of the Cataloging User's Guide "880 Fields and Unicode Implementation".

    The Library of Congress MARC Standards also provides extensive information about the 880 - Alternative Graphics Representation.
