    Question

What does Voyager use to determine "Cosmetic Differences" in heading validation?

    Answer

Voyager looks at HEADING.NORMAL_HEADING when validating headings. NORMAL_HEADING strips out punctuation and makes all letters upper case. If a match is made between the NORMAL_HEADING and the normalized heading in the record, the heading is validated.

To then determine Cosmetic Differences, Voyager compares AUTH_HEADING.DISPLAY_HEADING and BIB_HEADING.DISPLAY_HEADING. When the two normalize to the same heading but have slight variations in the display heading (the heading as it appears in the records), there are Cosmetic Differences.
