Question
What changes are coming to Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) content in the Central Discovery Index (CDI)?
Edit 18 May 2022:
DOAJ have restored the OA Start Date values to their metadata downloads, and Ex Libris have returned these dates to the "DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals - Not for Discovery" collection (Alma Collection ID: 61111061245432000, SFX ID: 111061245432000).
We will be making further changes to the two DOAJ collections shortly, for more information, see this article: Primo: DOAJ - changes to collections for Central Discovery Index (CDI) - May 2022
Edit 15 June 2021:
Due to responses from a survey on the OA Start Date availability, DOAJ will be restoring the OA Start Date back into their metadata downloads. They have not announced a date that it will be fully restored, but they are taking steps to do so and giving it the highest priority. We will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
Edit 01 June 2021:
Due to issues in correctly attributing rights for SFX and Alma, we are adding a new collection to be used for CDI Discovery rights-only, and changing the current DOAJ collection's name so it is clear which collection to select (or both, depending on the customers' needs), as indicated below. This change does not affect 360 Suite and Intota Customers, who should continue to use the existing DOAJ collection as noted in the original version of the article. There is no new collection for 360 Suite/Intota.
New DOAJ for CDI Discovery use:
- DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals (Note: Prior to 2021-06-01, this was incorrectly listed here as "DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals - for Discovery", which is incorrect. The correct collection does not include "- for Discovery") - Alma Collection ID: 615410000000002658, SFX Target ID: 5410000000002658
Existing DOAJ collection for resource management and other non-CDI purposes:
- DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals - Not for CDI Discovery - Alma Collection ID: 61111061245432000, SFX ID: 111061245432000
Answer
Background
In late 2020, DOAJ changed the types of data that they collect from OA publishers, which affects the data available for Ex Libris to collect for use in our knowledgebases. One of the changes they made was the removal of coverage information from their title-level CSV export, which DOAJ felt was not necessarily understood by the publishers or entered properly and became problematic to support. You can read more about the changes that DOAJ made and the reasons why here:
Impacts
Removal of the open access start date to the CSV file means that the Ex Libris knowledgebases (Alma, SFX, and 360KB) will no longer have coverage information for each title, which affects how rights are communicated from the KB to the Central Discovery Index (CDI). For titles that also have paid content from other sources, lack of coverage information for the free/OA content listed on DOAJ means that Primo/Summon will not be able to determine which articles to surface on a title-by-title basis from any DOAJ selections/activations. Therefore, we need to switch to collection-level rights for DOAJ. This means that you will no longer be able to choose individual DOAJ titles that appear with full text availability in Primo/Summon, only the DOAJ records as a whole.
