    Question

Does GDC add an 035 field the way BulkImport does?

    Answer

Part of the GDC Data Change job builds on Voyager’s existing bulk import functionality. BulkImport in Voyager builds an 035 field out of the data in the 003 and 001 of the bib record. For example,

    Source 003 = OCoLC
    Source 001 = ocm 12345678
    035$a field = (OCoLC)12345678

This is useful when adding new records to the database. However, because GDC is modifying a record rather than adding a new one, this process of building an 035 on import may generate a duplicate 035. To adjust for this, GDC does not build an 035 for the ‘after’ bib records in a data change job – it overlays the old record without changing or adding any fields other than those specified by the data change job.*

*Some fields will be changed automatically -- the Leader, for example, will be altered if there is a change in record length. When this is the case, these changes will be visible in Preview.
