Personalized Ranking in CDI
Introduction
CDI's ranking accepts user preferences (such as the user's disciplines of interest and newer material preference) to rank the results for queries that include the CDI search scope. For blended searches that include CDI, the preferences are applied only to records returned from CDI. When this functionality is enabled in Primo/Primo VE, users can set and apply the preferences only in search tabs that include the CDI search scope.
CDI Discipline Mapping
The disciplines used by CDI are a select set of top-level subjects from the Hierarchical Interface to Library of Congress Classification (HILCC) – HILCC Sort by Categories (columbia.edu).
Content in CDI comes from many different sources, including providers and institutional repositories. The CDI service maps disciplines via Subject Terms and Call Number fields from these different sources. Disciplines are mapped at the individual item-level, not at the broad database level. Journal articles, along with items from many other resource types in CDI, have one or more discipline mapped to them. As new content is indexed in CDI, it is assigned to a discipline if there is a discipline match.
Matching via Subject Terms
When Subject Terms are used to match disciplines, they are mapped with the following:
-
The HILCC (Hierarchical Interface to Library of Congress Classification) subject terms associated with authority titles in Ulrich's (for journals) and the CKB (all content).
-
The Subject Terms in an item-level CDI record that have an exact match.
Matching via Call Numbers
When call numbers are used to match disciplines, they are mapped with the Library of Congress Call Number, Dewey Number, or National Library of Medicine (NLM Classification).
Examples:
-
The LCCallNum value is within the range of BJ1801 to BJ2195; therefore, the Anthropology Discipline is mapped.
-
The DEWEY value starts with the number 630; therefore, the Agriculture & Forestry Discipline is mapped.
-
The NLMCallNum value is within the range of W82 to W83.1; therefore, the Engineering Discipline is mapped.
