Moving file from EL Commons to our server

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
I'm trying to move four files from EL Commons to our server.

FTP via Putty isn't working. I ftp'ed to the ftp.exlibris-usa.com site. We are hosted on an Ex Libris RITS server.

Problem 1 - The system hangs up after I type the GET command to get the custom-08.sql file

Problem 2 - I was able to FTP the file via WinSCP, but even when I did that, I couldn't change the file permissions for me to edit the file while logged as ALEPH on Putty.

    Resolution:
The ftp.exlibris-usa.com server is designed to prevent users from writing a file to the server and then getting that same file. (It would need to be moved by our staff from a write-only directory to a read-only directory.) This is to prevent hijacking of the server by someone who wants to use it for distributing files -- which actually has happened to the ftp.exlibris-usa.com server in the past....

As you surmised, you are not able to ftp from your pc to a RITS server. It's possible that sftp could used, but for these EL Commons files, all of which are small, the practical thing is to:

bring the .rtf or .txt file up on your pc,
    select all,
    copy all the text, then
    connect to the server,
    switch to the appropriate directory,
"vi" a file with the appropriate name,
paste the text into that file, and
    save it.
